Hop on the ferry to Oerol: 5 things to explore on the Dutch isle of TerschellingPublished 23 May 2019 at 14:00 by We Are Public
Had enough of the city? Spend your summer days exploring the overseas art paradise Terschelling during this 10 day festival. We Are Public gives you access to the festival, but what programmes are really worth the trip and which performances are suitable for non-Dutchies? We’ve got a few (practical) tips lined up for you. Language no problem!
Tip 1: Combine exploring nature & explore upcoming artists
Imagine: the dunes, the sunsets and the whispering beachgrass. A perfect setting for a nice walk, but also for the artistic scaffolds! Walk along the route of Het Atelier and discover new makers that will open up their and your imagination. This year Marinke Eijgenraam, Warre Simons and Igor Vrebac wil discuss the sex appeal of Mother Nature, whether we are addicted to drama and what proverbial means in contemporary society. This program is multilingual.
Tip 2: (Re)discover the old familiar faces at Oerol
The theatre collective of Urland is another old familiar We Are Public acquaintance added to the programme of this year. Already 500 we Are Public members visited their previous performances. So take your chance to visit their latest play Bobby Baxter.
Tip 3: Rave along on smashing beats
We have to admit, we are somewhat prejudiced, as we already visited the premiere of this performance on the 18th of May with a bus load of We Are Public members during our Front Row event. Missed it? Don’t worry! Visit this Naomi Velissariou’s Permanent Destruction pop-up band performance during Oerol this year (spoiler: it is awesome). We are very curious how this show will be in a festival setting.
Tip 4: Get a peek into the backstage
Your festival wristband gives you access to the full programme at De Betonning stage. Why would this excite you as much as it excites us? Here you can visit the Supernature day, where you get a sneak peek into the backstage of a festival. Other acts to keep an eye on are Dutch musician and writer Aafke Romeijn, 45ACIDBABIES and Karel, the festival hit of this summer.
Tip 5: Get the festival experience: time for music
Whether you are visiting to see the latest innovative theatre pieces, indulge in the picking gardens, or already looking forward to the beach raves at the festival, you should definitely find some time for the musical programme at the Westerkeyn. Thijs Boontjes, Yallah! Yallah!, The Grand East & Ntjam Rosie are only some of the names performing on this stage.
Oerol will take place from 14 until 23 June at Terschelling. With your We Are Public pass you can book your festival wristband. The wristband provides full access to the music programme, the festival grounds, art projects and performances out on the streets. Buy your theatre tickets on oerol.nl.
