Jazz from the Balkans in Amsterdam
Clarinettist, saxophonist and composer Alex Simu hails from Bucharest but completed his music studies in the Netherlands. It was here that he assembled his quintet of jazz musicians who each play a surprising musical role. Take the pianist, for example. Usually found behind the keys of his trusted piano, he doubles as the quintet’s accordion player. Together they recorded the 2017 album, Echoes of Bucharest, which garnered international acclaim. The cultural identity of Bucharest is a prevailing feature of both the recorded music and live performance, and is partly informed by the deeply personal memories and emotions of Simu.
