Exhibition about an idyllic island under pressure
The exhibition Bali – Welcome to Paradise, on show at Museum voor Volkenkunde, reveals the complex realities facing the popular Indonesian island of Bali. More than 250 objects have been borrowed from the Bali collection of the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen. Fascinating decorations and rituals, influenced by the island’s ancient Hindu culture on the one hand and confronted by the downsides of the island’s enormous (touristic) popularity, are on display. Featuring works of contemporary Balinese artists, you will learn about the forces that have put the island under enormous pressure.
We Are Public members can visit the museum throughout the Christmas Holidays, from 22 December to 6 January, except on Tuesday 25 Dec and 1 January.
