Those of you who’ve seen Dutch-Moroccan film Atlantic know that surfing and a longing for freedom go hand in hand. Just the same, in Gaza a surfboard represents an escape from daily struggle.

Surfing in a warzone

Sometimes a little light-hearted fun is the only way to deal with a devastating situation. As the political situation in Palestine rages on, many of its inhabitants are unable to leave their land. In an attempt to make their ‘escape’, a handful of youngsters have taken up surfing. German-based filmmakers Philip Gnadt and Mickey Yamine follow a group of surfing youths, capturing their dreams of a better life and a safer world amidst the bombed-out ruins of their parents’ homes.
