Cherish Menzo made a layered performance in which she cleverly plays with stereotypes from hip-hop and clip culture. She breaks the mirror into pieces, sometimes violently, sometimes quietly and seductively. Then she invites you to collect the pieces and use them to form your own image.
Selected by: Daniël Kieft, Theatre curator

Jezebel refuses to be defined by others. Navigating the landscape of hip-hop culture, she seeks ways to claim her image for herself. Can Jezebel deconstruct the controversial stereotype of the Video Vixen, the hyper-sensual black women in ’90s and ’00s hip-hop music videos?

With JEZEBEL, dancer and choreographer Cherish Menzo creates a challenging performance on the border of dance and performance. With this performance, Cherish won the Fringe Award 2019 and has been nominated for the BNG Theaterprijs 2020.
