What’s Easter without a rendition of Bach’s St Matthew Passion? The legendary oratorio is one of the masterpieces of classical music in large part due to its subtle harmonies and epic final chorus. It is also one of Bach’s most well-known compositions, in which he plays with harmonies and figures, steeping the score in references to the gospel. Although the texts are undoubtedly based on the Gospel of Matthew and the suffering of Christ, its the music that elicits the greatest admiration and renders it a wondrous affair for both believers and non-believers. This performance is courtesy of the Bachkoor Holland, which was first founded in 1921 and is celebrated for the quality of its Bach recitals.
