Every Friday afternoon, behind the glass facafe of the Melkweg in Amsterdam, seasoned DJs and young turntable talents spin live music to start off your weekend in energetic fashion. Today, two DJs from the now beloved Yallah! Yallah! club nights. No clichéd fairy-tale music dripping with Orientalism, but contemporary Palestinian speed-dabke, Moroccan hip-hop, Syrian trap and Egyptian reggaeton. Djette Nanixa, for example, made a name for herself on dance floors in Morocco when she was 19, before conquering Utrecht with her house, trap and dancehall mixes.

Ben Terwel
Music curator
Ben Terwel (1989) is both curator and programme coordinator for music at We Are Public. As curator, he mainly focuses on musical experiment, sound art and other sonic discoveries that are difficult to categorize. He also loves to take you along into adventurous club music. He graduated from the interdisciplinary Interfaculty of ArtScience at the Royal Conservatoire and Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2012. In that environment, he educated himself as a sound artist and performer, with a particular fondness for electro-mechanical sound installations and self-made musical instruments.
